Any visitor to the Dominican Acres property where Shepherd’s Corner is located will
soon notice the abundance of wet places along fields and trails. As a proximate part
of the watershed of Blacklick Creek on our western border, our land serves as a
sponge and filter for rain and winter melt run-off. The "Ask the Land"
survey delineated several wetland areas as evidenced by the hydric (wetland) soils
and species of plants that require a wetland habitat. Visitors will notice the more
obvious wet spots on trails, in the labyrinth and in our woodlands.
Though some think of these areas as a nuisance, we recognize their value for the important functions they provide to streams, wildlife and water quality. By restoring our existing wetlands, managing the flow in other places - like around our community garden - and developing additional wetlands where they can be places of water retention, beauty, purification and study, we are doing our part to "give back " some of the "lost" wetlands that used to fill our county and state. These important areas of our habitat serve as the vital "kidneys" of our township and county and community
