The Woods

At the extreme western part of the property is the "Big Woods." This approximately fifty acres or so of both mature and successional woodlands are very special. Featuring deep ravines where Spring wildflowers abound, and two intersecting trails - marked with Yellow and Red blazes - these woods offer a welcome respite from the "civilization" that surrounds us.

Oak, hickory, cherry, ash, and beech compete for the high overstory, while maple, buckeye, pawpaw, are content below. Huge giants shade both Blacklick Creek and a northern tributary offering shade, food, and home to both visitors and residents. Fall is especially dazzling with color, birds and other creatures abound. A small fire circle with benches is found just off the "Red trail" making a great spot for a picnic, program or for quiet contemplation. The "Yellow Trail" features a primitive campsite high above the shale-bottomed tributary. Give yourself plenty of time to explore these "astonishingly beautiful" woodlands.
